DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

The Department of Anthropology will make travel awards available to graduate students presenting a paper at a recognized national or international meeting. Each semester up to three awards in the amount of $500 each will be given on a competitive basis (two in cultural anthropology; one in archeology or physical anthropology). Funding decisions will be based on quality of the proposal, faculty letter of support, and significance of the conference and paper for the student?Äôs progress in her or his degree program. Initial decisions will be contingent on submission of the complete paper by the time of reimbursement.

Eligibility: graduate standing in anthropology, UHM.

Application: Applications will consist of (1) cover letter that includes: (a) applicant?Äôs year in the program, (b) applicant?Äôs subfield specialty, (c) the name and location of the event, (d) nature of applicant?Äôs participation (including name and organizers of symposia/events in which applicant will present work), and (e) how participation in this conference will directly benefit the applicant?Äôs progress toward completion of a graduate degree; (2) a one-page statement of purpose that includes both the paper/presentation abstract and an explanation of whether this paper/presentation is based on previous completed (or in progress) research or on working ideas for future research; (3) copy of the invitation and conference agenda showing acceptance of the paper, (4) one letter of recommendation from a member of the UHM anthropology faculty.

Deadline: Applications deadlines are September 1 and February 1 for fall and spring travel, respectively. Funding decisions will be conveyed by the end of September or February each semester.

Completion: Upon completion of travel, students granted awards will be required to submit a copy of their paper, receipts covering the amount of the award, and a statement indicating other sources of travel support.
