"Kauvai" is the local name for
a small coral atoll in the
Ha'apai region of Tonga.
Generosity and pragmatism are important aspects of
everyday life.
Fishing, farming & weaving keep people very busy. Similar pursuits are evidenced in archaeological sites on the island, dating back almost 3000 years. |
Work
is gendered,
with a great deal of cooperation between spouses, siblings, other kin, and neighbours. |
Life today depends mostly on the subsistance
and artisanal skills of the hard working people, and on remittances from
overseas kin.
|
Conditions
are rustic, simple,
and safe. People of Kauvai refer to their island as a "peaceful place, where we can be free."
Children
and education are both highly prized.
