University of Hawai'i, Manoa, and University of California, Santa Barbara, Archaeological & Ethnographic Field Schools, Vanuatu 2003

Pounding Taro

In 2003 (June-July) we plan to offer a special program in Vanuatu in central Melanesia. University of Hawai`i and University of California, Santa Barbara, in collaboration will offer archaeological and ethnographic field schools held in tandem on the small, traditional island of Malo in central Vanuatu. The ethnographic field school will be directed by Dr. Shankar Aswani, University of California, Santa Barbara. The archaeological field school, directed by Dr. Terry Hunt and Dr. Jean-Christophe Gaulipaud (I.R.D.E.C., France), will focus on Lapita ceramic sites on Malo Island.

Students taking the archaeological field school will register with University of Hawai`i; those enrolled in the ethnographic field school will register with University of California, Santa Barbara. We will share logistical arrangements and conduct complementary research programs on the island of Malo. Specific details on the ethnographic and archaeological field schools in Vanuatu will be announced at a future date.
