paenga. A large hare
paenga is situated about 135m northeast of the fallen moai (F 39) near
the center of the valley. The fallen moai (F 39) is 259 degrees
west-southwest of this hare paenga.
The hare paenga is oriented lengthwise at 27 degrees, measuring12.80m
long. The widest point,
exclusive of the entryway, is about 1.5 m. The northern interior portion
of the hare paenga (4m) is paved
in poro.
The paved portion is separated from an unpaved portion by two
transversely placed stones. The remaining interior area is unpaved. The
entryway is roughly centered on the west wall, facing the ocean and the
main ahu (F 48) at a bearing of
300 degrees. Two paenga stones
marking sides of the entrance each have postholes carved completely
through from the inside wall to the top of the stone. At the end of each
of these entryway stones are single poro
positioned upright. The exterior pavement of poro
extends out from the west-southwest side of the hare
paenga, facing the ocean. The pavement forms an approximate half-oval
shape extending from the exterior west wall of the hare
paenga. The pavement measures 7m in length and 2.5m in width. The
pavement is supported on the downhill edge by two paenga.
The east-southeast, or uphill side, of the hare
paenga is disturbed and being pushed inward (downhill) by colluvium
accumulating above it. There are two outlying paenga in the same area, about 4m and 6m from the entryway. The
pavement has a scatter of obsidian flakes. |
