F25 Hare Paenga   (click on photo for alternate view)
Hare paenga, associated pavement.  This hare paenga structure measures 16m by 3m (including entryway stones). The structure is comprised of 34 basalt stones with irregular cupped depressions. The structure appears to be complete, with all stones present and mostly undisturbed. The structure faces toward the main ahu, with a view from the entryway of 303 degrees. The entrance stones have cupped depressions that connect from the top of the stone to cupped depressions on the lateral portions of the stones. There are cobbles within the structure that do not appear to be associated with the original construction. The associated pavement has regularly placed poro (beach cobble stones) extending in a crescent shape northwest from the hare paenga structure, 14m in length by 4m in width. Most of the stones seem to be in their original context. The stones merge with the capping poro of the cave (F44) that is directly in front of the hare paenga. The hare paenga structure is about 70m at a 40 degree bearing from the fallen moai (F 39). The pavement stones grade in size, smaller toward the southwest and away from the entrance, and are larger closer to the entrance (to the north of the structure). Of note are also about five areas in the pavement where the stones seem to be arranged in a circle forming a small clearing in the center.
