| Hare
paenga, associated manavai.
The hare paenga is an elliptical
form 17m in length with a maximum width of 1.6m. Stones on the seaward
(west) side have been greatly disturbed by an uprooted eucalyptus tree.
The entryway stones located in the middle of the structure on the seaward
side are defined by a threshold carved out of a paenga
stone 60cm wide and 6cm deep (labeled
"A"). The pavement
is disturbed, and consequently distributed throughout the structure, but
primarily on the seaward side and under the fallen tree. Stones which
define the entrance pathway are disturbed and located under the tree as
well. The paenga forming this structure appear to be large. Exposed
stones at the threshold are 57cm deep and 2m wide. A disturbed manavai
complex that appears to comprise four enclosures covers an area to the
rear of the hare paenga structure.
The manavai are filled with
stone perhaps to serve as “stone mulch.” We observed obsidian
artifacts located throughout the area of the feature. |
