AnSWR by CDC (FREE!!)
AnSWR (Analysis Software for Word-based Records) is a free text-based qualitative analysis software from the Divisions of HIV/AIDS Prevention, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
NVivo by QSR International
NVivo is an excellent qualitative analysis software. Available in English, Japanese, and Chinese. You can try their evaluation version (Note: you cannot save your work with their evaluation version).
ATLAS.ti
A visually oriented qualitative analysis program
C-I-SAID
C-I-SAID combines the analysis of text, video images, audio, and still images. It preforms many analysis including lexical and rating scale.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
* Each GIS or Remote Sensing software has different file format, and usually incompatible with other programs. Please consult your colleagues and advisors before deciding which GIS product you will use. Yet, it's still good if you can use multiple GIS software.

One of the most widely used GIS software in the world. UH students can get a discount price. Go to ESRI Site License Program of the ITS.

Another GIS software
IDRISI 15 from Clark University
Relatively cheaper but works excellent.

Excellent Remote Sensing software
Free GIS software
KASHMIR 3D (FREE!!)
This is a revolutionary GIS software. It's free but capable of basic map browsing, GPS mapping, and even movie making function. Compatible with the digital map sources of the USGS, the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) of Japan, Landsat Imagery, etc. It's free. Highly recommended for Japan focused researchers.
