Department of Anthropology
Undergraduate Student Travel Award

The Department of Anthropology will make travel awards available to undergraduate students presenting a paper at a recognized national or international meeting. Each semester up to three awards in the amount of $1000 each will be given on a competitive basis. Funding decisions will be based on quality of the proposal, faculty letter of support, and significance of the conference and paper for the student's progress in her or his degree program. Initial decisions will be contingent on submission of the complete paper by the time of reimbursement.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate standing in anthropology, UHM.

Application:

Applications will consist of (1) cover letter that includes: (a) applicant's year in the program, (b) the name and location of the conference, (c) nature of applicant's participation, and (d) how participation in this conference will directly benefit the applicant's progress toward completion of a degree; (2) a one-page statement of purpose that includes the paper/presentation title and abstract; (3) copy of the letter of acceptance, invitation, or conference agenda showing acceptance of the paper, (4) one letter of recommendation from a member of the UHM anthropology faculty.

Deadline:

Applications deadlines are September 15 and February 15 for fall and spring travel, respectively. Funding decisions will be conveyed by the end of September or February each semester.

Completion:

Upon completion of travel, students granted awards will be required to submit a copy of their paper, receipts covering the amount of the award, and a statement indicating other sources of travel support.
