Field Trips
Bolivia has much to offer in terms of natural beauty and historical sites. During the first and last weeks of the 2010 Archaeological Field School, all project participants will be treated to a number of field trips around the country. All costs associated with these field trips are included in the field school fee. In addition to field trips around La Paz and Lake Titicaca in the first week, we will visit the mines of Oruro, a number of museums around the country, and time permitting, the breathtaking Salar de Uyuni (salt flats) to the south. Some of the places we will visit include:
- The haunting Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) outside of La Paz
- The fascinating collections of the Museo Nacional de la Arqueología (National Archaeology Museum)
- Mercado de Hechicería (Witches’ Market)
- 16th century Iglesia de San Francisco
- The ancient capital of the Tiwanaku State
- A boat ride on gorgeous Lake Titicaca to the small island of Isla Pariti, surrounded by totora reeds
- Bolivia’s world renowned folklore capital of Oruro, with South America’s most traditional Carnaval
- The breathtaking salt flats, Inka mummies, colored lakes and flamingos of the Salar de Uyuni
You are encouraged to extend your stay to travel within South America after the field school closes on July 10. It is both very safe and very inexpensive to do so, and sights such as Machu Picchu, the Nazca lines, Chilean wine country and the Amazonian rainforest are within easy reach from Bolivia.
